The DOGANA Annual Retreat 2025 featured a leadership session moderated by Dr. Sohail Rao, with Dr. Omar Lateef as the guest speaker. Here are some highlights of the session and tips for those who are seeking a leadership position especially as a change agent.

Leadership, at its core, is not a title or a destination—it is a calling. And when that calling involves driving change, the path becomes even more demanding. If you aspire to be a leader, particularly one who challenges the status quo, here are a few truths to keep close to your heart:

1. Purpose and Passion Are Your Compass:
Never pursue leadership for prestige or recognition. Instead, let your journey be driven by a clear purpose and a fire within. Passion gives you the stamina to persist when obstacles mount.

2. It Is a Lonely Road:
The higher you rise, the thinner the air becomes. As a change agent, you will often find yourself standing alone. Do not be surprised when your circle grows smaller. Expect few genuine allies…and many silent critics. Some will support you to your face while quietly hoping for your failure. This is not cynicism…it is reality. Stand firm.

3. You Will Lose More Often Than You Win:
Real change does not come easy. You will encounter resistance, rejection, and setbacks…many of them. Projects will stall, policies will be challenged, and people you counted on may turn away. But in every failure lies a lesson, and in every loss, an opportunity to recalibrate.

4. You Must Be Willing to Be Burnt…and Reborn:
Leadership demands that you pour yourself into the fire of transformation. You may be misunderstood, criticized, even vilified. At times, you will feel broken, disillusioned, and exhausted. But if your foundation is strong, you will rise from the ashes stronger, wiser, and more resilient.

5. Leadership Is a Sacrifice, Not a Reward:
True leadership is not about privilege…it is about responsibility. It requires you to give more than you receive, to serve more than you are served.

Following the walk, fruits were distributed among patients to promote the benefits of a heart-healthy diet and emphasize the role of nutrition in managing blood pressure.

Hundreds of lives are lost every month due to undiagnosed or poorly managed hypertension. This awareness walk played a crucial role in educating the public and encouraging proactive health measures to prevent complications.
